SNOW REMOVAL AND CINDERING

The Borough makes every attempt to have the Borough streets and roads plowed and/or cindered whenever an accumulation of snow occurs. It is our practice to clear the entire width of the street or road from curb to curb.

Parking of Vehicles on streets during snow storms: To help us accomplish this task in a timely manner and not place our Public Works staff at risk, we ask that when snow is forecast and/or when snow is falling, you remove any vehicles from the road or street. This includes residents of cul-de-sacs. Failure to remove vehicles from the street or road will result in our inability to plow your street or cul-de-sac. This will impact not only you but your neighbors as well.

Snow Emergency: Depending upon the amount of snow that is forecasted or accumulates, the Borough may declare a Snow Emergency. The Shrewsbury Snow Emergency Ordinance #1987-7 as amended #1993-9 prohibits parking on Snow Emergency Routes and all other Borough streets and roads when a Snow Emergency is declared. Vehicles that are parked on the street or road during a snow emergency are subject to a citation and/or will be towed.

Announcements of Snow Emergency will be broadcast on radio and television stations. These include WSBA-AM 910, WARM 103-FM and WGAL-TV Channel 8.

Sometimes, these emergencies may be declared after you have left your residence. To avoid the risk of citation or having your vehicle towed, if there is a forecast for snow or snow is actually falling, please remove any vehicle(s) you have parked on the street or road prior to leaving.

Driveways: We ask that you refrain from clearing your driveway until we have finished plowing the street or road (The street or road has been plowed curb to curb and has been cindered).  However, if you want  to clear your driveway before we have finished plowing/cindering,  and to avoid having snow pushed into your driveway by the snowplows, we recommend that you clear an area along the curb line six (6) feet either side of your driveway. This will provide a place for the snow in front of the plow to fall and minimize the amount of snow that may get pushed into your driveway . We recommend both sides of your driveway since at times we will plow the street or road from either direction.

Snow from driveways, sidewalks and walkways is not to be shoveled, plowed, blown or thrown into the street or road.  This can cause dangerous driving conditions for your fellow residents and Borough Public Works employees.

Sidewalks:  If sidewalks exist in front of your residence, you are responsible for removing the snow from the sidewalk within 8 hours of snowfall.

Fire Hydrants: Should a Fire Hydrant be located in front of your residence, you are responsible  for clearing  the snow from around the Fire Hydrant within 8 hours of snowfall.  Failure to do so may result in the Fire Department being unable to locate and connect to the hydrant in the event of a fire or delay this process, placing your property or your neighbor's property at greater risk should a fire occur.

Mailboxes: Please remember to clear the area around your mailbox. The Post Office may be unable to deliver your mail if they cannot access your mailbox.

Trash: Should trash pick up be scheduled for the day the snow is forecast or is falling, please place any trash containers (cans, bags or boxes) behind the curb line, an area adjoining your driveway, and not in the street. While plowing streets, these items are not often visible and can create dangerous safety hazards for Public Works staff operating the snow removal equipment.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation and your help in enabling the Borough to plow the snow and spread cinders in a safe and timely manner. Should you have any questions regarding the above, please contact the Shrewsbury Borough Public Works Department at (717) 235-1427.
